Our History: Building Opportunity and Community Since 1975

Riverdale Place Workshop Inc. was founded in January 1975 by families of children and adults living with intellectual disabilities. At the time, there were limited opportunities for meaningful day programming and employment within the community. These families came together with a shared vision: to create a safe, inclusive place where their loved ones could learn, work, and participate fully in community life.

After years of dedication, advocacy, and collaboration, Riverdale Place Workshop became a reality. The original program focused on day services and a structured work program, including the creation of handmade products sold through an on-site store, as well as sourcing additional work opportunities within the community.

Over the decades, the workshop has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of participants. One of the most significant developments was the introduction of a consistent recycling service for the Town of Arborg and the Rural Municipality of Bifrost–Riverton. This service has become a vital community resource and a source of pride for participants, who take ownership of their role in supporting environmental responsibility.

In addition to vocational programs, Riverdale Place Workshop has expanded its social and recreational offerings, creating opportunities for participants to engage in cooking activities, mini-excursions, music and drama, celebrations, and community events. These experiences enrich daily life and strengthen social connections both within the workshop and beyond.
